I love thrillers. The ones that keep you up late even though you're dog-tired. Ones that make you keep flipping the pages because you're desperate to know what happens next. But what is it about dark, twisted stories that captivate us? I live a normal (whatever that means?) life with my husband and two energetic kids, so why do I choose to spend my days crafting dark stories of psychological suspense?
The Excitement of the Twists and Turns
This is why I love reading thrillers - I want to be shocked, to put the book down and say I never saw that coming. Perhaps it gives me a rush of adrenaline? There's also something so intriguing about what lurks beneath the surface of seemingly normal things.
As a thriller writer, I love constructing heart-stopping mic drop moments, where I hope you as a reader will be stunned and rethink everything you believed was happening in the book. Ah, yes, the art of misdirection!
The Thrill of Fear – From a Safe Distance
Let’s be honest – fear is thrilling. As long as we're safely curled up on our sofa or tucked up in bed. That's why we devour crime novels, psychological thrillers, and true crime documentaries on Netflix. They let us experience the darkest sides of human nature without any real-world consequences. A win-win!
When I'm writing, I want to create that uneasy feeling – the one that makes you glance over your shoulder, double-check your locked door, or question whether you really know the people around you.
Ordinary People, Extraordinary Situations
Some of the most terrifying stories aren’t about serial killers or supernatural forces. They’re about the people closest to us – the neighbour with a hidden past, the husband or wife keeping a devastating secret, the best friend who isn’t what they seem. That’s why I’m drawn to writing and reading domestic suspense – because sometimes, the scariest thing isn’t a stranger in the shadows… it’s the person sitting right next to you.
I love exploring how far people will go to protect themselves, their secrets, or the ones they love. Because at the core of every thriller, aside from the crime or inciting incident, are the characters involved. The choices they make. The lies they tell. The lengths they go to when the walls start closing in.
And maybe a reason we love these stories so much is because as we're reading we're asking ourselves one question: What would I do if I were in that situation?
And as a writer, I'm lucky enough to get to answer that question – again and again, in ways that (hopefully) keep you on the edge of your seat.
So tell me – what’s your favourite kind of thriller? A slow-burning psychological twist? A high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase? A dark and eerie mystery? Let’s talk thrillers! 📚🔪✨
